Kerala, branded as God’s Own Country, is an Indian state on the southwestern tip of India. Known for its beauty and habitability, Kerala is endowed with a lush, undulating landscape which is second to none in India.
After a lifetime of innumerable travels throughout the state, I am as much awestruck with its beauty as I am dismayed at the sight of local and corporate billboards in various stages of decay. These advertisements have become an unavoidable sight of such magnitude that they are as frequent as trees on the roadside!
The random and obnoxious array of such signage has overwhelmed the popular psyche to the point where signs have become ‘normal’ and ‘expected’ by people so much so that the natural scenery without them is as unusual as it is ‘abnormal’.
Presented in this series of images are the corporate ‘signatures’ which are first put on the landscape, and then copied insidiously onto the collective mind of the community.
