These photographs are about how I saw streets as an enormously open stage that surrounded me with its vast backdrops, with LIFE unfolding in all its diversity through innumerable events. I have removed all chronological, conceptual and visual orders from the presentation of the images, just as it would happen in a street. I am concerned with animals, inanimate objects, and abstract concepts just as I am with human life. Implied in this statement is my interest in architecture, man-altered landscape, built-spaces, graffiti, and marks of urbanization; fenced as well as open spaces; decay as well as growth; loneliness, mysticism, and faith; uncertainties, destitution, poverty as well as exuberance; temptations and disillusionment; stillness and movement; moments in their surreal as well as symbolic contexts; hope, humor, absurdities, abandonment and, sometimes, blankness and nothingness!
Looking at this large body of work, and considering the whole as a stage with its various theatrical elements, I am presenting it in SIX parts: The Backdrop, Spaces, the Props, Dialogue, Monologue, and the Story.
അനന്തമായി നീളുന്ന ഒരു തുറന്ന വേദി എന്ന നിലയിൽ തെരുവുകളിൽ ഞാൻ കണ്ട കാഴ്ചകളാണ് ഈ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ. വിശാലമായി ചൂഴ്ന്നുനിൽക്കുന്ന രംഗപടങ്ങളും നിരന്തരം ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ജീവിതസന്ദർഭങ്ങളുടെ വൈവിധ്യവുമാണ് ഇവിടെ വിഷയം. തെരുവുകളിൽ ഇതെല്ലാം സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് എങ്ങനെയാണോ അത്രതന്നെ ക്രമരഹിതമായാണ് ഈ ചിത്രങ്ങളെയും ഞാൻ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തെ എങ്ങനെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നുവോ അത്രതന്നെ ഞാൻ മൃഗങ്ങളെയും അചേതന വസ്തുക്കളെയും അമൂർത്ത ആശയങ്ങളെയും കാണുന്നുണ്ട് – സവിശേഷ സ്വഭാവമുള്ള കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ, മനുഷ്യൻ മാറ്റിമറിച്ച ഭൂഭാഗങ്ങൾ, നിർമ്മിതസ്ഥലങ്ങൾ, ചുമർചിത്രങ്ങൾ, നഗരസ്വഭാവങ്ങൾ, അടഞ്ഞതും തുറന്നതുമായ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ; വളർച്ചയും ജീർണ്ണതയും; ഏകാന്തതയും ആധ്യാത്മികതയും; അനിശ്ചിതത്വവും, അനാഥത്വവും ദാരിദ്ര്യവും എന്നപോലെ തന്നെ ആർഭാടവും; പ്രലോഭനവും മോഹഭംഗവും; ചലനാത്മകതയും നിശ്ചലതയും; സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ വൈചിത്ര്യവും പ്രതീകാത്മകതയും; പ്രതീക്ഷ, ഉപേക്ഷ, നർമം, അസംബന്ധം എന്നിവയും; ചിലപ്പോൾ ഒന്നുമില്ലായ്മയും ശൂന്യതയും!
